There are ups and downs

Today slept most of the day and night. Its 3 am now. Tomorrow sending letters that I have been writing for so long. Hopefully doing Christmas shopping because I still haven´t. My sister Leticia found out she is going to Germany the beginning of January so things are a little crazy around the house now. We are still taking our vacation for Christmas break, its just shorter now. So might not get the opportunity to see Julianna in Lodrina. Its okay though. I am still getting to go to Paraguay and Foz do Iguaço so thats really cool. Then I will get back from that I believe the first of January and not sure if Im packing my bags and changing houses or waiting until after I return from my trip to the NE. So greatful for my mother she has done so much to make it possible for me to go on this trip. Calling them all the time and emailing making sure its all working out correctly. I think its going to be an amazing time and I didnt want to do a whole month at first now I cant wait. Its expensive, but she made it happen and so did my father and all the people that donated to me. I am indescribably grateful. Went to two parties last weekend one was a white party for a fifteen year olds bday. Bet it cost a ton of money. They are big here like Mexico or the Sweet 16´s you see on MTV. It was a blast my calfs and feet are killing me though from wearing high heals. They dont really know how to dance to american music, but when brasilian music comes on they go nuts. The macareena came on and no one had any idea what to do. So I went to the middle of the floor and started dancing. Then they started following it was awesome. Going out at 1 and not coming home until 5 was kicking my butt though. The next party was bye bye 2011 it was fun. It was outside and because of the rain we had to dance in mud. They dont understand PDA here thats a little akward dancing while people are playing tounsel hockey all around me. Just something I have to get use to I guess. Need to go to bed so I can get up on time to send my letters tomorrow. A little home sick because it really doesnt feel like Christmas here with all the rain. Barely any lights around. No Christmas music or movie marathons or hot chocolate. I made sugar cookies for my rotary though and listened to FM christmas music that was nice. My rotary loved the cookies. So some positive and negatives in this post. Thats life for you though. Goodnight who is ever reading

Past three days

I had a mass on Tuesday night for my graduation. Wasn't bad didnt understand it all though. Wednesday went shopping with my sister for about 4 hours for shoes when we both ended up going back to the first store and bought our shoes there. They bought me heals for R$100 so about $50! Had an hour and a half to get ready for out graduation. Went got a bunch of pictures taken except my mom only took l...ike one so I need to get ahold of the professional that was there. They put me in slide show with a quote about arriving and adjusting. Talked about me in the speech with an inside joke it was really sweet. I walked with my third dad down the aisle I guess to the stage. We dont keep our caps and gowns here. They gave me like a letter instead of a diploma because I techinally didnt graduate and will be going back to the same school next year. Had a dinner after wards then a small dance they loved watching me dance. Teenage Brasilians either dance forro or funk generally. Went to a bowling alley with my friends, but it was closed so just went home. Yesterday a classmate of mine had a bbq at his grandparents farm. I helped prepare the salad. They threw people in pool just like Americans do. people danced a little. I got a sunburn on my chest from falling asleep in the sun. A cop stopped by but no one got in trouble.Tons of people stayed the night there. Finishing up my last things for my trip to the NE! Still dont know where I am going for Christmas.

Many emotions

Its been awhile since I posted or wrote in my journal. I am out of school though for about 2 months so I have time. Just going through alot. I went without Thanksgiving this, no big deal. Got a new nephew failed all my finals in school including the english one =) who remembers past immediate and future continuing or something like that. I got very overwhelmed with the language and my bloood pressure sky rocketed. I am good now after my mom freaked out. Gotta love. The brasilians are very loving and caring and took me to the ER when my blood pressure was high. We tried to get an english teacher here to help me with learning portuguese. It was a good try, but was unsuccessful. I made a deal with myself though I am going to study everyday in December because I dont feel like I have gave portuguese a fair shot. I am five days in and not exactly successful I would say. Need to get back to business. Went to a movie in Brasilia Amanhecer, didnt like it, but it blew me away it was in English with portuguese subtitles. Addicted to Smallville now with my family. Going on a trip to the NE in January my dad gave me a pep talk about money and safety while traveling. He also gave me one about being strong and that I am capable of staying here. That hard things are better than easy things in the long run. He told me about his dad when he passed away from cancer it was touching because my dad works alot. So I got to see a different side of him. Went to a party with the other exchange students in my district. It was cool to meet them all. Blew me away everyone speaks english so well thats the common language for everyone. The mexicans spoke spanish togethor and the brasilians dont understand. But the mexicans speak very good portuguese in my opinion. Evryone thinks my language ability is very good and compared to some of the other exchange students it is. I atleast try, but I could be working alot harder and need to be. One mexican girl already went home, I didnt get to meet her. The girl from Germany only likes speaking english. One girl from America got here late October and right after she got here she got pneumonia. I would have freaked. She hasnt been here long, but she doesnt try to speak the language she only speaks english. I kinda wish I lived in Brasilia where most of the other exchange students live so I could go out with them. But at the same time I am glad I am in Formosa because of the ppl I have met and if I would have the chance to speak english alot I probably would. SInce I am alone here I have no choice to speak portuguese and only have brasilian friends so I am acting experiencign the culture.

I impressed some one. He emailed me this.

Hoje sei a reposta,

Sorry if the translation had an error.
Sincerely Paul, Formosa-GO BRAZIL
New people in the middle of us.
Written by Paul Reis.
Some time ago, something curious happened to me,
An interesting question to ponder
Why did you call me attention, I am interested to see you smiling and dancing?

Responses did not live immediately, but continued to weigh on you ...

Today I know the answer,
Love releases it, love listening to the music of happy smiling people,
I love finding people who really have the spirit of adventure in their hearts
Who are willing to change, even if only for a year
And then rediscover that are no longer the same,
And do not let people know that this journey be as before,
That is,
In this journey, transformed themselves and the people around you.
In all this I met a girl who translates all this feeling

It's called Mackenzy Hunsaker

Its decided

I am staying I can do this even if it takes me the whole time to learn portuguese. The hardest things in life are usually the ones that are most worthwhile. My family and I did so much work and paid so much money to get me here can´t just back out now. I wasn´t raised a quitter and I would rather not start right now. Anything is possible through God. He brings you hardships to define and purify your faith. He has a set path for you and will never give you too much than you can handle. I actually have to work to have a social life now, but it will be beneficial for the future. And the people here are so nice, caring, and loving I can turn to them and just sign when I need help.

Home from Trip

Stayed home from school today because of my allergies. I think I might be getting an ear infection. They have been bothering me since going scuba diving. Slept most of the day too. Unpacked my bag and reorganized with my presents and the stuff I bought. Called my counselor finally told him how I was feeling. Then I didnt understand what he said. I dont think I can go back to the US and then come back here, but thats what it sounded like he was saying. My dad is a dork he took the not talking literally no email on my birthday but he is good texted him today to make sure. My vacation was amazing my family made sure I didnt get a sunburn tons of sunscreen and sitting under the unmbrella. Went snorkling in the natural pools in the ocean and then scuba diving. My nose was terrible the day after and now my ears hurt like ear infection my parents are trying to take care of it though. Road in a boat that was connected to a glider over the ocean it was beautiful and relaxing. Didnt get a sunburn only got a little color though. Swam with a bunch of fish. Ate crab fish octopus shrimp and I am sure other sea food. Drank coconut milk tried the coconut meat wasnt good. Stayed in a duplex that reminded me of Lake Michigans beach houses. It was adorable. My hotel room had a big bed and a small bed that was strange instead of one big or two smaller equal size. You use normal keys to get into the rooms not cards. Went to a feira in Maceio and did some shopping at Porto de Galinhas. It was my uncles birthday yesterday went to a restaurant that served pizza like gerties it was nicer though. It was good. Ate banana acai on pizza brigadeiro on pizza but not the ice cream one I was full by then. Got pep talks today about the language. A boy named Paulo that was at the churrasco com colleger students wrote a poem about me it was soo sweet about changing just for a year smiling and dancing in the middle of people and not understanding. made me smile. Do I stay or do I go?

17

My suprise birthday party was amazing yesterday. I had a hint it was coming but I thought it was going to be at a restaurant not my house. Thank you Letícia Kaory Kaihara and Brunna Gontijo you surprised me. Here they put eggs on your head instead of pushing your face in the cake. Neither happened to me thank goodness. Just smelt bad cuz I hadnt showered yet and had volleyball yesterday. Had Japanese food ate California rolls with Salmon in them so I obviously am trying new things. FInally weent to SUbway the night before though and I had to get wheat with just cheese and ham just like always to see if it was the same. Not bad BUt I have had better. They were blown away it was even a bigger deal here than the US that that is all I get. HAd a white cake it wasnt vanilla though idk it was good though and then the lovely chocolates that are always at parties. I thought my family forgot my birthday other than my siblings who woke me up with hugs and parabéns. Finals week in finally over. Today was teachers day so they did a skit joking about the teachers. I actually got to laugh. People stuffed their bras just like we do in the US for jokes. Going on a trip with my family to the NE for the beaches!!! 5 days in paradise leave tonight and I was the first one all the way packed and ready. That was a first. My presents were like soaps and lotion and chocolate. They give baskets full of random food here too on your birthday thought that was neat. Getting a sore throat but its all good. Got my moms package finally today. Went to the post office it was closed. Went to the other they said it didnt exist. Got home and it was in my garage. Way to the God. One random sock a random guitar pic and shorts that were in the donate pile gotta love her. =) Took legit senior pictures in the gowns and stuff they also have cape like things and handkercheifs and we all shared the gowns didnt have our own individual. Tchau gente.

Blown away

Went shopping today bought some stuff for my trip. :) still blows me away how expensive things are here it makes hollister look like marshalls. Got a swimsuit its covers less than normal but it covers i made sure. A brazilian wax might happen in the near future though. Met a different uncle, he came to Brasilia because he met a girl online and tomorrow is her birthday so he came here to take her out. They make baskets with like cakes and goods in them then in the morning of your birthday they give them to you. Its neat. I have to study I am happier now, but the fact that I cant have a conversation with the clerk when i am checking out bums me out. Ate sushi today and chinese food I can only handle some fish it wasnt bad though. Went out to a dance club last night there were bouncers and everything. Forro again, but I cant go dance with any one cuz I cant talk to them. Ahhhhh!!!!! It was fun, but they are like whatever in heals and my feet were killing me. Went home at one and they said that was early. Oh I gotta figure something out for my face acne is bad. I love it here, but I have to study. I am sure I look lazy cuz its been two months and my portuguese is still awful. Hmmm anything is possible through God and he has already made a path for me so if I learn the language or not its all in his hands.

Best day sooo far!!!

Today was amazing!!! I went to a churrasco and at first it was akward it was with all the people I saw at the festival de musica. I can't figure out how to play one card game Truco so we played dominos. I love how people just play music on their guitar here and then everyone sings if they know it or they try. Then I played UNO, they play a little different bur it's pretty much the same thing. Then I went inside and saw people dancing forro. They told me to join in I love it still not very good at it cuz it's kinda akward the first time. We went outside played a game where you have to guess what the person is doing kinda like charades except a boardgame. They wanted me to try and we actually got three points I had help with explaining the words though. Then the dancing started they played like to the window to the wall get low that sorta music. I busted my moves out and people watched and copied same as US. We danced in a circle and people went in the middle I LOVED IT!!! forro again then we started talking in Portuguese just slowly and I was capable it was amazing!!! This party was with college kids but they are like 17 til 20. Then my family explained intensidade to me and I understood for the most part. Tart de banana is amazing ate it at cecilas house. Watched Scooby Doo today they also still have Johnny Bravo not just Doug. Skipped with Syd Dee and Willow. Thanks God best day yet so far!!! Also taught them the Macarena great bonding. Had senior pictures yesterday didn't fall on my face in heals! Got allowance went out with friends. God is awesome!!!

Kickin it.

Well this weekend I played soap soccer and laid out by a pool. Got a sunburn cuz the SPF they use here is 20 and I forgot to keep putting it on. Used aloe all is good now. Went to feira de pastal so like a massive flea market. It was cool. Drank sugar cane juice watched them make it. drank straight from a coconut done it before but still legit. Watched the Smurfs with my cousin. Figured out how to say " IT BURNS" in portuguese. It was a great weekend. Just not being able to hold a conversation kills me. I talked to my family cried, but they made it better they have my back and are impressed by me. If I need anything they will make it happen. I truely miss them and love them all appreciate you guys more than you know it!!! I was blessed to be born into a family like mine =)

Metaphor

Ok so I feel like I am at the bottom of the pool and when people talk to me you think you understand, but to find out when you get out of the pool you were completely wrong. I know God isnt going to let me drown and he is with me. Eventually I will pop out of the water and being speaking portuguese beautifully. All I need to is studying and take the time to learn the language. Its all in His hands and in the end I will not wanna come home I will not wanna speak english and He will make things happen that I didnt dream aboout. Great things take time, just gotta remember that. I have write a speech in English and present it alone, so that my speech teacher can see what I am capable of. The popcorn was good, but you could tell I wasnt comfortable because I didnt know the pronunciation. See things like that arent helping me. I talked to a guy though and he wants to find a way to help me learn maybe enter me in a little kids class. I will take anything right now. SO I am off to study...and write the speech on why its so difficult to learn portuguese for english speaking people.

My update. With showing American culture alittle bit and dying to understand Brasileiro Culture!!

Made Kettle Corn thanks to Doreena Corley for my speech class they loved it. Dont have it here, gave a speech about Valpo`s popcorn fest I was really nervous microphone, heals, portuguese, and jeans in a no air conditioned room. It wasnt too bad I bet I look like the tin man in the video though. I am debating finding a teacher for portuguese because class right now is probably the worst thing ever. I kinda sorta have friends, but barely talking to them or any one isnt my cup of tea. And if I truely am going to experience the culture I need to understand whats being said. I want to be funny again! I want share my culture and completely go head over heals for another. I want I want I want is all I am saying when I should be putting in the work because I reap what I soe. Practice makes perfect. Should have practiced before I came here. But better late than never. Paula Cunha gave me a bracelet she bought in Porto Seuguro, you make a wish when you put it on and a long time later when it breaks the wish comes true. Or atleast thats how I think it works. Eu vou estudar agora. Chow. Ate mais!!!

I stole this from Austin!

5 weeks.

I went to Itiquira, the famous waterfall in Formosa. It was amazing a drop of 1 km so beautiful and powerful. Hiking back there was neat to seeing nature at its finest. And the mountains driving out there blew me away. Black cows are rare here mainly white ones with humps, because they eat that at barbeques. Sent my letters still have no idea when I will get my packages. Today I went to a birthday party with just my dad. Had doce de leite. =) and I could actually talk with the women I was pumped it was good to see studying paid off. Helping Leticia translate youtube videos about popcorn because we are writing a speech about Valpo being famous for popcorn and having a fest for it. My dad was teaching me so many new words today while driving around town it was nuts. We sprung forward today so now I am 3 hours different from Valpo and 4 from Twin. Soon I will be 4 from Valpo and 5 from Twin because you guys will fall back. My aunt and uncle bought me a book to help learn phrases that was nice of them. Going to bed soon because Spring Break is over and so is sleeping in late.

Spring Break

Made Rice Krispie treats today they loved them! My little brother is a big fan of the mini marshmellows. I went and finally mailed letters. It cost me R$9.40 for two envelopes with letters. Balls! You cant just send letters from your house here, you have to go to the post office for them to weigh them. Very different. Probably going to Itaquita, the famous waterfall here tomorrow. Got some good st...udying in this week, still just wish I had the super power of time control. Now I wish I also had the power to understand anything that happens, spoken, or signed. We dont always get what we want though. The hardest things in life though are usually the ones worth while, jjust gotta keep reminding myself that.

one month uma mes

i went to an orphanage yesterday, held a little baby girl named Shelly. We took fruit there, facepainted the kids, and played brasileiro dodgeball. Skyping with dee right she is fasinated with portuguese. Saw the cites in Brasilia went up in the where the president works and we went up in the tv tower it reminded me of seatles spaceneedle. Saw where a new stadium is being built for the world cup. Its raining like crazy here and sooo hard. I have been here for a month and i turn seventeen in a month. First day of Spring Break this week I jumped rope in my room cuz I needed to do something. We are in the rainy season it rains every day and I have never seen such strong rain. Today I studied portuguese while my sister studied German for her exchange. I really like my church and recognizing the music. The book of James is Togem so that confused me. Went to a rotary training this week the other students that arrived late were mexican, so they spoke the language pretty well I was jealous, they also spoke english very well that was strange. I tried mint chocolate chip ice crea, here it wasnt very good. There peanut butter is different good though. My aunt drives an automatic car that was the only one I have seen so far. Que mais...what else...eu nao sei....i dont know....Chow

It's october!

That's crazy. Been here three weeks now. Even crazier. I got my uniform for school reminds me of basketball sweats and a pajama shirt. Took tests in school this week that was interesting. I need a calculator I think my mom is buying me one this weekend. I thought I understood math then I took the test no idea what I was doing. Tonight im going to a music festival with a kid I know from rotary. I feel like I'm sleeping alot sometimes because im sick of Portuguese others because I don't think any one in my family has gotten eight hours of sleep two nights in a row. They dont sleep often. I'm translating homework that's a tedious task, but helping I can actually hold conversations with people now. Loving volleyball and the girls there are fascinated with me. All the little kids at school call me Americana amiga. Trying to decide on a trip to take. Praying alot alot I think I might go to a baptist church on Sunday. Everyone asks me about my religion they don't know what Christians are here though so I thought baptist was the closest thing. I have been to a wedding that was gorgegous and tons of horedivores. I had chocolate and banana pizza that was delicious. Ooo and brigada is this amazing chocolate. I have to drink tons of water or I get head aches from dehydration. I think we have spring break in a week can't wait to see what happens. It rained the other day everyone was so greatful. I think that's all for now. Chow

My Historia teacher asked me to read the chapter it was one of the hardest things i've ever done didnt finish but I think itll help me learn. really enjoying volleyball and my time here. I have gotten home sick but my devotions are definately helping. They played music i use to hear in church at the wedding last night so i want to find out their religion and go to a church like that. They dont know what Christians are here and none denominational churchs are. I found out the united states has daughters of job though like the thing i participate in with my family. definately learning the language I still get frustrated though, but i know more. Hoje (today)

Went to a churrasco ( barbecue) at a rotarians partents house. It was Bonita casa. Or casa de Bonita. Eu no sabe-idk. It was really good. Eu amo sorvette. I love ice cream. Almost caught the house on fire porque (because) I wanted to look at Brazils tours, mas (but) the comp was in my parents room and they were resting. So I unplugged the phone and plugged it in some where else because it fit. So I could use the convertor that the phone was using. My dad walked in the kitchen then out quickly. My sister walked in and asked if I moved the phone and she unplugged it feeling it oddly. I said yes but I can put it back. She then explained the reason for the convertor cuz the voltage is too high for the phone. My iPod charger can handle higher voltage. So I couldve lit the house on fire. So note to self ask! Rotary always said to and I think I usually do. Had marmalade it was sticky then popcorn it tasted kinda like card board. Gave a speech in Portuguese at a festa do rotary. A rotary party it was the first time I wore my blazer here. I was scared it wasn't too bad. I need to learn Brazils anthem. When your congratulated at rotary functions they have one person clap tres vezes three times and everyone else twice. I usually just apostles took me awhile to catch on. Had a towel toalha whipping war with my brother today. School tomorrow. Woo English class thought I would never say that. Boa noite goodnight

Thursday, September 15, 2011

It's been about a week.

I like it here. Sure it's hot and I have to wear jeans often I don't understand half the things people say and can't talk much, but that makes me want to learn the language more. I ordered my uniform for school. Right now I stand out even more because I'm dressed different. School is very different block schedule with twelve classes total can't do the work cuz I don't understand eu no intendo. Stay in same class the whole time teachers switch. school from 730 til 1. No lockers I'm in the third and last year of high school here. They think it's amazing I can drive. They drive like they are on a mission here 160 km/h here in a 110 speed limit. They stop at red lights and stop signs when they feel the need to. I go to Brasilia often went shopping today bought two books in one. There stuff is expensive here. Like 30 reals so around 25 dollars for the only kind of flip flops they have here. Oh they never are quiet in class and always have phones out the teachers don't care. Ppl treatme very well. No air conditioning any where. Sister leticia is very helpful and I like playing video games with my little brother Alexandre. Umm I'm dying to learn Portuguese using xandre's book tolearn English forhim Portuguese for me. My family likes chocolate just as much as I do. No clocks any where it's rare. This is a calmer part of brazil not super crazy during carnival. Mom and dad are happy about that. I'll post again soon. Boa noite goodnight.

Here and overwhelmed.

Well I have been here since Friday evening. I feel like Im in a spainsh soap opre because I dont understand anything for the most part. My family here is very nice and caring and trying even though we cant communicate much. I need to hit the library for childrens books. They listen to alot of the same music we do. My little brother loves video games and pokemon and his wii. Im in Brasilia right now. I shouldve brought a working watch because I never know what time it is. There is no air conditioning in any house Ive been in. My Uncle George here tonight was helping me with some basic portuguese. I am still emotional and talking on the phone is difficult. Not speaking alot isnt my norm so maybe that will be my motivation to learn portuguese. I start school on monday so pray for me. My house is an apartment and reminds me of something like you would see in New York. They told me about Carnival around Brasilia they just like the days off for vacation not big into the parties. They love juice here and fruit. Im excited for Doce Deleta. Keith Urban is playing right now. For not having phone plans they have nice phones. They drive like mad men they dont stop at Pare(stop) signs. Tons of round abouts. No parking is an E crossed out. Its 0:06 here or 1:06 so were going to bed. I cant get on the computer alot but its probably for the best. I love all you guys so much and will talk when I can. I need to ask them about razers because in their showers I cant find one so I wonder if they wax everything. I hope not or Ill be a hairy mamojamma. There is no apostrophe on the keyboard. But there is the things over the a and under the c. Goodnight America I love and miss you all. Im not scared here and I think I will love it but right now its just so different and takes getting use to. Spanish is like portuguese but the pronunciation is nothing alike. Jet lag is kicking my butt and my host mom Anne doesnt think Im eating enough but I do they eat all the time. Vamos dormir to go to sleep thats what Im doing now. Then something like church tomorrow. It is japanese based you have to wear socks to go in you pray facing the temple and clap and bow during the prayer. Ati logo See you later.

Bobby Ashley and my family threw me a suprise going away party last night. Thank you guys you will be missed so much. Love you guys! Packing tonight. A ten month commitment to one suitcase I'm not a big fan of. Its difficult to only take certain things. My english teacher in foromosa emailed me. Thank goodness I think we wll be close. I think I'm ready to go I know its real now and its going to be hard, but everybody dies, but not everybody lives. I'm ready to  live a life so many people wont get the opportunity to. I am truely blessed.

Finally!

I found out I leave today! I will be departing September 8th so exactly one week. Right now I am traveling alone. I'm stoked and cant sit still while everyone else is like crap she is actually leaving. I should be some what packed and somewhat fluent in portuguese right now. Which I'm not oops. Wrote in my journal and now finishing up final things to do before i am on an airplane. Finishing my letters as we speak and praying they are beneficial because those trips are  calling my name. If not I'm just blessed to be going to Brazil. Thank you God for answering my prayers and not loosing faith while I was trying to patiently wait.
